Alonzo Briones Sr.'s Obituary
Alonzo Briones Sr., age 83, of Del Rio, Texas passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 at home in Del Rio, Texas. He was born on July 16, 1937 in Del Rio, Texas to Juan Briones and Filomena Lopez Briones. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Olga Cortinas Briones; parents: Juan Briones and Filomena Lopez Briones; brothers: Ruben Briones Sr, Ricardo Briones, Raul Briones and sister Maria Elena Briones Sotelo.
Mr. Briones met the love of his life, Olga Cortinas Briones, when they were both very young. They married in 1957 and had six children. They are Alonzo Jr, Velma, Baldemar, David, Jo Ann and Eddie. Through the years, the family remained united and always gathered to celebrate together. Alonzo always enjoyed raising not only his children but also some of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Alonzo, one of nine children, was a hard worker at an early age. From working out in the fields as a young child to working for the Hicks Ponder factory, to owning his own business and later working for the City of Del Rio. In the late 1960’s, he owned Southside Mobile Gas and Repair Station on Margarita Street. In the 1970’s, Alonzo began working for the City of Del Rio in the Street and Maintenance Department as a street maintenance employee. As a city employee, Mr. Briones truly enjoyed his job driving different machinery as he moved up through the ranks to Assistant Superintendent until his retirement. One of his recollections was during the great flood of 1998. He and numerous City of Del Rio employees worked around the clock helping the citizens of Del Rio and Ciudad Acuna, Mexico. After retirement, “Grandpa” as so many knew him as, went to work for the family business. Olga’s Gifts and Crafts was located in downtown Del Rio. Alonzo and Olga would wake up together, eat breakfast and head to the store. Working together for almost 20 years made life great. He would often proclaim, “Your grandma is tough on me at work!”. These were truly their golden years. Alonzo will always be remembered as the person who would welcome you into his home and never let you leave without a good conversation and offering something to eat and/or drink. He was a great and loving family man.
Mr. Briones will be missed most by his family. His sons: Alonzo (Martha Guerra) Briones Jr., Baldemar (Blanca) Briones Sr., David (Jacin) Briones, Eddie (Jackie) Briones.
